Fish Farm

Fish farming, or pisciculture, involves the raising of fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. This differs from a fish hatchery in that a fish farm will not release juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement natural numbers. Worldwide, the most common fish species raised on fish farms include carp, catfish, tilapia, and salmon.
There are two types of fish farms: intensive and extensive. Intensive fish farms rely on technology to raise fish in artificial tanks at high densities. Aquaculturists must have a thorough understanding of the particular species they are raising so that water quality, temperature levels, oxygen levels, feed, and stocking densities are kept at optimal conditions to reduce stress, disease, and mortality levels as well as promoting growth.
Extensive fish farms are more basic and require less husbandry of the fish. These farms are done in natural environments, including the ocean, lakes, rivers, bays, and Fjords. Fish are contained in mesh enclosures which also function as nets for harvest.
Fish farming, like other types of agriculture, can pose risks to employees. Aquaculturists may be exposed to pesticides and chemicals, which can cause issues ranging from skin irritation to burns to cancer. There is also the risk of working in and around the water, often during the night or in poor weather conditions.
Agricultural jobs rank as one of the most dangerous in the U.S. If you or a loved one was injured, you may be entitled to compensation depending on the circumstances of your accident.
