Getting Your Motorcycle License

Before you can think about buying a motorcycle, you should know the requirements involved in being permitted to drive one, in the first place. Firstly, every state in America requires you to have a Class M motorcycle license or endorsement in order to legally ride on the roads. “Class M” simply refers to a license specifically geared to motorcyclists. Though the requirements vary slightly throughout states, generally it is mandated to successfully carry a motorcycle permit before getting your motorcycle license.

You must first get a motorcycle permit and complete a driver’s education course, as well as pass a vision screening, skill exam, and written motorcycle exam. In Illinois, for instance, the youngest age at which you can obtain a motorcyclist’s license would be 18-years-old. At 18-years-old, you are permitted to use an instruction permit which mandates older, more experienced supervisors with you as you ride the motorcycle.

A vision screening exam tests your visual acuity to ensure that you will be able to see things properly on the road. A written exam will test your knowledge of traffic signs, rules, and state-specific laws pertaining to motorcycles. A skill exam will test your actual ability to properly ride the motorcycle in a safe manner. An alternative to the exams may be a motorcycle rider’s education course which concludes with these exams in a different format to test if you can obtain your license by the end. Once you can prove that you have passed these three exams and have successfully gone through the permit period, you should be able to obtain your motorcycle license.

These steps, though some may consider it lengthy or tedious, are necessary to ensure that motorcyclists know the best way to protect themselves and others while on the road. Driving a motorcycle is much different from the experience that most of us know in a car. If you follow what you are taught in the period of learning before obtaining your license, then you will be safer and smarter.
