No two types of farms are alike—with different farms producing different products. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service defines a farm as any place that produces and sells $1,000 or more agricultural products a year. The types of farms and farmers will vary by the types of products that they produce and sell, with some farms falling under multiple categories.
In the United States, you will typically find seven (7) different types of farmers and farms. These include:
- Subsistence – This is a type of farm where the farmer produces just enough food to supply their family. They do not sell any farming products and it is not intended to provide income, instead a subsistence farm is typically seen in families looking to “live off the grid”.
- Commercial – Commercial farming is the opposite of subsistence farming and is intended to provide an income. These farms can consist of growing crops, raising animals, or a combination of both.
- Crop – Farmers who specialize in fruits, vegetables, or grains are considered crop farmers. Most large-scale farms are monoculture farms, meaning they grow only one type of crop at a time.
- Fish – Fish farming, or aquaculture, involves raising fish in large tanks.
- Dairy – These farmers raise dairy-producing livestock such as cows, sheep, or goats for the production of milk, cheese, and yogurt.
- Poultry – Poultry farms typically raise chickens and turkey for meat however some farmers raise poultry strictly for eggs as well. While larger-scale farms are the norm, the demand for locally produced, humane, free-range chicken, and eggs is rising.
- Meat – These farms exist solely for the production of meat for consumption and include pig farms and cattle farms.
