9 Months ago I finished my Masters Degree in Counseling and had to take out private loans to do so. When my loans came into repayment I needed to do a deferment which Sallie mae told me I had up to 24 months to defer at 3 months at a time for 150 dollars each 3 month period. It was my hope that within that 24 month time frame I would be able to secure a job as a counselor in a school. I am currently a teacher looking for a counseling job. I called Sallie mae last night to redo the deferment and pay the 150 dollars. The customer service personel told me that Sallie Mae had changed their policy and this would be my last deferment. She said the company decided to change to 12 months instead of the 24 months I was told. This upsets me considering I am a teacher in a contract and the earliest i would be able to secure and counseling job would be next August. I tried talking to the rep but she was extremely rude. All i could hear was laughing in the background of the call. I ask if i caoul speak to a supervisor, which was still no help. Becasue the customer service rep so so ryde I stated that I would like to call back in the morning in order to speak to someone else. The rep then told me that the deferment would be “OFF THE TABLE” if i called back tomorrow. I asked her several times to please allow me to call back to set up the deferment with someone else and again she was extremely rude. I have NEVER been treated this way by anyone at Sallie Mae. I have always been treated with kindness and compassion. I finally hung up the call after the supervisor told me I could not speak when I ask if I could please speak. His exact words were “NO YOU MAY NOT SPEAK UNTIL I AM FINISHED IS THAT UNDERSTOOD” . At this point I was in tears and decied it was best to hang up. He also told me if i hung up I would not recieve the deferment. I am completely shocked at the way i was treated. I was very upset that after being a customer with Sallie mae since the early 1990’s that Sallie mae decided I could no longer do the 24 months and now its 12 and I still do not have a counselor job. Sallie mae assured me many months ago that i would have the full 24 months and we spoke often even as early as 3 months ago i was asured i had the 24 months on my private loans. I think it is completely wrong that between 3 months ago and now, it has changed and my loans are now due. I am stuck now and trying to figure ou how I am going to pay on loans i was told From SALLIE MAE i had 24 months to defer. I am appauled at the lack of customer service from Sallie Mae. I have always felt i was treated well until last night.
