All vehicles must be powered by some type of energy, whether it be fuel or human power. Certain types of vehicles have motors or engines that consume the energy source to make the vehicle operate. Motor vehicles typically utilize internal combustion engines, which are either intermittent or continuous, or external combustion engines.
Internal combustion engines are very common heat engines that burn fuel. Intermittent internal combustion engines are one subcategory which intermittently burn fuel in a combustion chamber, thus causing pressurized gas to make the vehicle move. They are the more widely utilized type over continuous combustion. Continuous combustion engines are typically gas turbines, which are used to power air crafts, ships, trains, electrical generators, pumps, and tanks. They convert power into mechanical or electrical form to move a distance.
External combustion engines are heat engines where a fluid in the engine is heated by combustion externally and expands to move the vehicle a distance. The energy source in these engines should be some type of working fluid, a liquid or gas or both, and can be reused or dumped.
