Peru, IL Two-Car Accident Injures 2

Two people were treated at Illinois Valley Community Hospital on Tuesday after a two-car accident in Peru involving three people, according to police. According to Peru police chief Doug Bernabei, the injuries are fairly minor, considering the speed at the time of the accident.

Faren Moore, 25, of LaMoille and a passenger, Bradley Ruffner, 47, of Cedar Point, were hit from behind by a vehicle driven by Mitchell Miller, 20, of LaMoille. The accident happened just after 11 am on Route 251 and N. 31st Road.

Miller was charged with operating a vehicle without proof of registration and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Chicago Heights School District Employee Driving Vehicle that Fatally Struck 2nd Grader

New details were released on Monday about the accident in which Chicago Heights School District employee was driving a district truck when it fatally struck 7-year-old Jackson Hill in October. According to police reports, the driver, Mascitti, told police he never saw the boy.

A witness attempted to warn the boy, who was trying to avoid a mess caused by a water main break on his way to school, not to walk into the street. The witness also told police he thought the driver was traveling too fast for conditions.

The Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team, however, found the pickup truck was “traveling at a low speed” between 13 and 15 mph, “which is not uncommon during a normal turn.”

Mascitti told police he made a right turn from Chicago onto 16th Place and heard a thump. He stopped and saw a backpack and heard screaming. He told police he never saw anyone in the intersection.

The driver was not charged in the accident.

Hill’s parents, Kellee Walker and Kenneth Hill, filed a lawsuit against Mascitti and District 170, alleging Mascitti was speeding and failed to watch for pedestrians.
