Pig Farm

Pig farming is the breeding and raising of domestic pigs as livestock for food (pork products and bacon), clothing, cosmetics, medical use, and skins. Pig farmers tend to raise pigs based on their life cycle and may not necessarily raise the animals from birth to market. In the United States there are five (5) types of pig farms, which include:

  • Farrow-to-finish – These pig farms manage all stages of pig development and growth, from breeding to finishing at the market weight of approximately 285 pounds.
  • Farrow-to-nursery – Farmers specialize in breeding sows and raising 40-to 50-pound feeder pigs that are sold to farms that specialize in raising the pigs until they reach market weight.
  • Farrow-to-wean – These farms oversee breeding herds and raise pigs until they are weaned at 10 to 15 pounds and then sold to wean-to-finish farms.
  • Wean-to-finish – Weaned pigs are raised until they reach market weight.
  • Finishing – Finishing farms buy 40 to 50-pound feeder pigs from farrow-to-nursery farms and raise them until they reach market weight.
Intensive pig farms, also known as pig factory farms, are a subset of pig farming and is the industrial side of raising pigs for slaughter. Intensive pig farms allow for the raising of larger numbers of pigs in a cost-efficient manner, however they have come under some controversy as pigs are raised in large, warehouse-like buildings or barns with little exposure to the outside.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), over one billion pigs are slaughtered worldwide, with 100 million of them in the U.S.
