Aside from this, an auto insurer is prohibited to nonrenew your policy solely on your credit information. Should your auto insurance company nonrenew your policy based on your credit report, they must give you the name of the national credit bureau that provided the information so you can request a free copy of your credit report.
Reason for Nonrenewal (Policy Active for 5 or More Years)
Per the laws in Illinois, an auto insurance company may decide to nonrenew your policy for limited reasons provided they send you a 30-day written notice or for nearly any reason if they send you a 60-day notice. Your insurer, however, may not elect to cancel your renewal that’s been active for 5 or more years for reasons including age, gender, race, ancestry, color, creed, marital status, occupation, employer of the insured, or physical handicap (as defined by law).
Since January 1, 2003, auto insurance carriers are prohibited from nonrenewing your coverage based solely on claims related to hate crimes in the last 60 months. This is enforceable provided the insured provides the insurer evidence that the act resulting in the loss was a hate crime based on a police report.
