I have been past due owing to my unemployment. I spoke to a representative of Navient October of 2012 who said I would need to file for unemployment deferral. I completed the online form and the deferral was accepted. I was notified that collections would continue, and to make payments whenever possible. As of 1/22/2013 I spoke to an agent who informed me that deferral only covered half of my loans. After explaining that I could not find a job, and wasn’t even affording insulin for my diabetes and depression, the representative went on to tell me that I was pathetic for not being able to pay my debts but was able to cover my medical expenses. After about 20 minutes she asked for a contact who could assist me in making a small payment and they would notarize the account as up to date. I didn’t have a number, but was able to get the buildings phone. She put me on hold, and told me that operator didn’t know the person we were trying to reach. She told me that I was wasting her time and that she was going to mark me down as a refusal to pay. Immediately after she hung up on me and called the office and I had no problem reaching my contact. It has also come to my attention that Sallie Mae has made multiple attempts to collect the debt from my grandmother in Florida as well.
