Tobacco farming takes place annually, where tobacco plants are germinated in cold frames or hotbeds and then transplanted into the fields until it matures for harvesting. For tobacco to be suitable for human consumption, the tobacco leaves are dried and cured after harvesting and are used in the production of cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, and shisha tobacco.
In the United States, North Carolina is the largest tobacco producer, with over 1,800 farms employing over 30,000 workers producing over 331 million pounds; Kentucky and Virginia are also top tobacco states. However, with the decline of smoking and the end of the Tobacco Transition Payment Program, tobacco farming in the U.S. has begun to decline, making China, India, and Brazil top tobacco producers worldwide.
There are also multiple problems seen in tobacco farming. In addition to agriculture being one of the most dangerous industries to work in, child labor issues, the use of large amounts of pesticides, and big tobacco companies taking profits from small farmers have also contributed to the decline in tobacco farming in the U.S.
