Here are some recommendations for vehicle safety from the National Safety Council (NSC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • Do not allow passengers in the vehicle, when possible.
  • Always turn off vehicles during refueling.
  • When there is no driver inside the vehicle, ensure that it is parked and turned off with all attachments disengaged.
  • Farm equipment traveling on roadways should display a Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) emblem.
  • Equipment that may cause falling debris should contain Falling Object Protective Structures (FOPS).
  • When verbal communication is prohibited by noise or distance, implement an efficient system of hand-signals between workers.

Regarding the storage of farm vehicles:

  • Store vehicles away from any livestock, debris, or fuel storage tanks.
  • Ensure that electrical lines are too high for passing vehicles to strike.
  • Ensure that storage structures are lockable and contain clean floors and easy exits.
  • Remove all keys from stored vehicles and do not allow children or non-employees inside storage structures.
