Agricultural workers are exposed to a tremendous number of hazards on the job, which is why agriculture ranks as one of the most dangerous industries in the United States. These hazards put workers at serious risk for injuries, many of which can be devastating.
According to Oregon State University/College of Agricultural Studies, workers in the agricultural industry suffer from increased rates of respiratory diseases, skin disorders, chemical toxicity, noise-induced hearing loss, certain cancers, and heat-related illnesses to name a few. These health hazards can be life-altering, even fatal.
Most Common Health Hazards
Respiratory Hazards
The most common respiratory illness that agricultural workers face is Organic Dust Toxic Syndrome (ODTS) with flu-like symptoms that is caused by inhaling dust from moldy hay, straw, or grain. Other dangers include exposure to toxic gasses, chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers.
Confined Space Hazards
Confined spaces are those with limited means of entry and insufficient ventilation. This may include manure pits, tanks, and grain storage areas. These areas have a risk of Methane, Hydrogen sulfide, Ammonia, and/or Carbon dioxide gas accumulation that is both toxic and at-risk for explosion.
In addition, confined spaces are a risk for entrapments. Rescue equipment and a rescue plan should be available when any employee is working within a confined space.
Chemical Hazards
Agricultural workers are frequently exposed to chemicals that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has identified as requiring skin and respiratory protection. Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be provided for all workers and it is important to remember that facial hair can affect the seal of respiratory apparatuses, and any clothing that comes in contact with chemicals should be washed separately from other clothing or disposed of.
Hearing Loss
Hearing loss on the farm is common and can occur following exposure to machinery, tools, guns, and large numbers of animals in confined spaces. Hearing loss typically occurs gradually over time and may not be discovered until it is permanent. When noise exposure is over 85dB, PPE should be worn.
Heat and Cold
Extreme weather-related injuries include sunburn, hypothermia, dehydration, and heat stroke. Employees should take frequent breaks, wear weather-appropriate clothing, and stay hydrated to prevent weather-related illnesses.
Animal-Acquired Hazards
Injuries from animals include bites, kicks, and transmission of certain infectious diseases such as ringworm, leptospirosis, salmonella, Avian Flu, and Swine Flu. PPE should be worn around animals and animals should be kept in good health with proper husbandry.
Heavy Machinery
Heavy machinery used in agriculture is often handed down over many years. While roll-over protection structures are required in newer models of tractors, older models may not have this safety protection in place. Power take-off shafts, unguarded moving parts, chainsaws, motorbikes, ATV’s, and other farm equipment also puts workers at-risk if employees are not properly trained or the equipment is defective in design and/or manufacture.
