There are various types of skull fractures, each with different types of breaks and degrees of severity. There are major types of fractures, as well as more specific and special injuries. Among the major types of skull fractures, the first type is a linear fracture, where the break is one straight line without any further cracks or bone displacement. This often occurs due to blunt force trauma.
The second type is a depressed fracture where the broken bones are displaced inward so that they pose an increased risk to the brain tissue. These can be particularly dangerous since brain damage is more possible in addition to infection if the brain is exposed to bone displacement. They also often occur from a strong blunt force trauma.
The third type is a diastatic fracture where the fracture occurs at the sutures, or joints between the bones of the head, thus widening the space between the sutures. This also poses an increased risk to the brain tissue as it may be exposed or more vulnerable to brain damage due to the broken bones surrounding it.
The last type of skull fracture is a basilar fracture, which is the rarest and serious type. It occurs when the floor of the skull experiences a linear fracture. This can result in brain damage, clear fluid draining from the nose or ears due to brain tears, and more. This type of fracture would take a substantial amount of force to occur.
