What do you wear to a construction site?

Workers and visitors to construction sites must wear proper attire to remain safe. This will vary from job site to job site, but in general, there are universal codes that should be followed. These include:

  • Long sleeve shirts or T-shirts – Tank tops and sleeveless tops should not be worn, and all clothing should be snug to prevent getting caught.
  • Long pants – Pants protect workers’ legs and should be free from tears or holes and skirts or dresses should never be worn.
  • Closed-toe shoes – Flip-flops, heels, or shoes with holes should never be worn and almost always work boots are preferable, especially those with steel-toes and hard soles.
  • Protective headgear – This includes hard hats and helmets.
  • Safety glasses – Safety glasses should always be in use, especially around chemicals and power equipment.
  • Gloves – Depending on the specific job, gloves should be used.
  • Earplugs – If loud machinery is in use, earplugs will help prevent short-term and long-term hearing issues.
  • Masks – When chemicals, dust, and other work debris are present, masks should be used to protect breathing and vision.

In addition to these universal recommendations, workers should not wear jewelry at the job site and all long hair should be secured to prevent getting it caught in machinery. Many job sites require workers to wear brightly colored safety vests as well.
