A spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when there is any damage to the spinal cord resulting in a loss of motor and/or sensory function of some part or parts of the body. These result from high-energy trauma such as a motor vehicle collision, a harsh fall, or a contact sports injury. Since the spinal cord aids in the central nervous system’s (CNS) function, any damage here can cause an immense change in the affected person’s life.

There are two main types of SCIs: complete and incomplete.
  • Complete SCI – A complete SCI is when the injury causes total loss of all motor and sensory function below the level of injury. The ability of the spinal cord to send messages to and from the brain is completely lost in the affected areas. For example, if your injury took place in the cervical spine, you would likely experience quadriplegia which is paralysis or weakness in both the arms and legs. The cervical spine is the highest area of the spine, so any point below would experience paralysis or great weakness.

  • Incomplete SCI – An incomplete SCI indicates some loss of motor and/or sensory function. The ability of the spinal cord to send messages to and from the brain is not totally lost. This type of SCI has a much greater chance of recovery.
