What is hazard, risk, and exposure on the farm?

Agricultural careers are one of the most dangerous industries in the U.S. Every year, approximately 22 out of every 100,000 farm workers are killed in work-related accidents, with thousands more suffering non-fatal injuries. To prevent these serious, and often deadly accidents, it is important that agricultural workers practice risk management by distinguishing hazards, risks, and exposure on the farm.

  • Hazard – A hazard is a potential for harm that will cause an adverse effect on an employee’s health. Anything that can cause injury or ill health to anyone at or near the workplace is considered a hazard.
Hazards are classified into five categories, which include:
  1. Physical – Includes floors, stairs, work platforms, steps, ladders, falling objects, fires, slippery surfaces, excessive noise, vibration, heat/cold, radiation, poor lighting, air quality, and ventilation
  2. Mechanical and/or electrical – includes electricity, equipment, pressure vessels, dangerous goods, forklifts, cranes, hoists, and machinery
  3. Chemical – includes acids, poisons, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning agents, dust, and fumes
  4. Biological – includes viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew, insects, vermin, and animals
  5. Psychosocial environment – includes workplace stressors from a wide variety of sources
  • Risk – Risks are the likelihood that a hazard will cause injury or ill health to anyone at or near the workplace. The level of risk increases with the severity of the hazard and the duration and frequency of exposure.
  • Exposure – Exposure occurs when a person comes into contact with the hazard.
