Hazards are classified into five categories, which include:

- Mechanical and/or electrical – includes electricity, equipment, pressure vessels, dangerous goods, forklifts, cranes, hoists, and machinery
- Chemical – includes acids, poisons, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning agents, dust, and fumes
- Biological – includes viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew, insects, vermin, and animals
- Psychosocial environment – includes workplace stressors from a wide variety of sources
- Risk – Risks are the likelihood that a hazard will cause injury or ill health to anyone at or near the workplace. The level of risk increases with the severity of the hazard and the duration and frequency of exposure.
- Exposure – Exposure occurs when a person comes into contact with the hazard.
