What is OSHA and what is its purpose?

Until 1970, American workers had little protection in the workplace against hazards and illnesses. Congress, after reviewing eye-opening annual figures such as nearly 2.5 million workers were disabled, job-related accidents accounted for more than 14,000 worker deaths, and new cases of occupational diseases numbered 300,000, created the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act).

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was created within the Department of Labor (DOL) and is responsible for worker safety and health protection. Since its inception, OSHA has helped to cut the worker-fatality rate by almost half, reduced the overall injury and illness rates in all industries that OSHA oversees, and reduced trenching and excavation accidents by 35%.

OSHA and the DOL regulate and enforce more than 180 federal laws covering many workplace activities for approximately 10 million employers and 125 million workers. OSHA determines which standards apply to a particular industry and requires employers to follow these standards. All employees and their employers under Federal Government authority are covered by OSHA, either directly or through state-run programs. OSHA does not, however, cover self-employed workers or workers who are the immediate family members of a farming family.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
