Child
sexual abuse (CSA) is a persisting problem in the US and the State of Illinois. The
recent data collected by the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) showed that Illinois had 28,751 victims of child abuse in 2017; 4,140 of whom were sexually abused. Further, it shows that through 2017, there were 44,109 cases of HIV among adults and adolescents and 288 cases of children younger than 13 years old.
Sexual abuse in children leads to lifelong scars. Its long-term effects disrupt the victims’ and survivors’ lives, especially without intervention.
Victims and survivors of child sexual violence may experience a combination of the following:
- Victims of child sexual abuse are 4 times more likely to develop PTSD as adults and symptoms of drug use than non-victims;
- Victims of child sexual abuse are also 3 times more likely to develop depression as adults compared to non-victims;
- According to the American Counseling Association, the majority of victims take responsibility for their abuse (self-blame);
- Victims and survivors also tend to show “more self-destructive behaviors and experience suicide ideation”;
- Body image issues and eating disorders;
- Stress and anxiety;
- Withdrawal from people and usual activities;
- Dissociation (which may involve feelings of denial, repression, disorientation, confusion, flashbacks, and nightmares);
- Problems with interpersonal relationships; and
- Sexual dysfunctions.
Victims and survivors of child sexual violence responses to abuse will depend on the person and the consequent interventions following the abuse. While there are secondary preventive measures in response to child sexual violence, it’s important to engage in
primary prevention to protect children from ever being victimized.
