What is the most common accident in construction?
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the most common types of construction accidents resulting in deaths are dubbed “The Fatal Four”.
These four accidents accounted for over 58% of construction worker deaths in 2018 and include:
- Falls - 338 out of 1,008 total construction worker deaths in 2018 (33.5%)
- Struck by an object - 112 (11.1%)
- Electrocution - 86 (8.5%)
- Caught in/between - 55 (5.5%)
Roofers, chimney masons, other tradesmen, or any other construction worker who is required to work at six (6) feet or higher from ground level are at-risk for falls, serious injuries, and death.
There are several reasons for these accidents, including:
- Slippery surfaces
- Unstable walkways
- Faulty stairways
- Absence of guardrails and warning signage
- Scaffolding collapse
- Defective or improperly used ladders
- Lack of training
The injuries that result from falling accidents can be serious and include broken bones, spinal cord damage, head and brain trauma, permanent disability, or death. If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
