According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), falls continue to be the number one cause of death in the construction field. In 2017, of the 971 total construction deaths, 381 (39.2%) were due to falls. These falls typically occur through wall openings, floor holes, ladders, scaffolding, roofing, and other unprotected edges. OSHA recommends the use of guardrails, fall arrest systems, restraint systems, safety nets, and covers to prevent these serious, and often deadly, accidents.

Falls are part of what OSHA calls the “Fatal Four”, or the four most deadly types of construction accidents. The remaining three fatal accidents include:

  • Electrocution – Power lines, inadequate grounding practices, improper equipment use, and faulty power cords all contribute to electrocution on the job site.
  • Struck By An Object – Approximately 8% of accidents involve a worker being struck by an object that is falling, flying, swinging, or rolling, including vehicles, falling loads, or machinery.
  • Caught Between – These types of accidents can include trench collapse, rolling, shifting, or sliding objects, and workers being caught in machinery.

Eliminating the “Fatal Four”, according to OSHA, would save over 580 construction workers lives in the United States each year. Construction site owners, contractors, and other responsible parties have a legal duty to provide safe working conditions for their workers. When they fail to do so, employees can be seriously, and often fatally, injured.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
