What type of accident kills the most construction workers?

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), there are four types of accidents that are the most deadly on construction sites. These four types of accidents are dubbed by OSHA as “The Fatal Four” and account for over 50% of construction site deaths. These four types of accidents include falls, struck by an object, electrocutions, caught in/between, and electrocution.

Falls account for approximately 36% of all deaths in the workplace. These accidents occur due to unprotected gaps or holes, improperly constructed walkways or working surfaces, and workers without proper fall protection who have fallen from ladders, roofs, scaffolding, and other construction areas.

Struck by an object accidents occur when an employee is struck by a swinging, falling, or misplaced objects that occur due to rigging failure, equipment failure, vehicle or equipment strikes, and/or loose and shifting materials. Struck by an object accidents account for approximately 10% of construction worker deaths every year.

Workers on construction sites face numerous electrocution risks due to exposed wiring, wet conditions near electricity, overhead power lines, poorly maintained construction equipment, circuit parts in electric and equipment panels, and lightning strikes. According to OSHA, approximately 8% of fatalities on the job site are due to electrocution.

Caught in or between accidents occur when a worker is caught in or between machines, devices, construction materials, tools, or moving equipment, as well as trench and excavation collapses. These types of accidents account for approximately 2% of deaths in the construction industry every year.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
