Introduction 

Altgeld Gardens, extending from 130th Street in the north to the Calumet River in the south, and from approximately Langley Ave. in the west to the railroad tracks west of Doty Ave. in the east, is a public housing project constructed between 1943 to 1945 for the families of African-American servicemen returning from World War II. 

The development includes a public library, schools, an auditorium, clubhouse, and modernist shopping center, making a self-sufficient commercial development in the heart of Altgeld Gardens.

Transportation

The area is accessible using 130th Street, South Langley Ave., and South Doty Ave. Public transportation also runs to Altgeld Gardens with two bus lines (34, 348) and train service (ME).

Weather in Altgeld Gardens typically ranges between an average high of 33 ºF in January to an average high of 81 ºF in July. 

Demographics

According to the most recent U.S. Census, Altgeld Gardens hosts a population of approximately 8,000 community members. Approximately 90% of the population is African-American and 63% of these residents live below the poverty line.

Because of its proximity to manufacturing plants, steel mills, landfills, and toxic dumps, environmental hazards have been a concern for residents of the area.
