Introduction
Ashburn, named for its history as the cities ash dumping site, is located on the south side of the city. Greater Ashburn covers nearly five square miles. The approximate boundaries of Ashburn are 72nd Street (north), Western Avenue (east), 87th Street (south) and Cicero Avenue (west).
The area is famous for opening the first airfield in Chicago, Ashburn Flying Field, that was home to E.M. Laird Airplane Company in 1916.
Transportation
Ashburn is serviced by METRA’s Southwest Service, which runs Monday through Saturday at the Ashburn and Wrightwood Rail Stations.
Demographics
Ashburn, a middle-class community with a median household income of $63,573, has a population of 42,752 according to the most recent U.S. Census. In 2017, Ashburn was the only predominantly African-American community to receive the Good Neighbor Award in Chicago from the NEXTDoor organization and continues to experience population growth in the African-American community.
