Introduction
Chinatown is located in the Armour Square community area of Chicago, on the South Side and is an example of an American Chinatown. Chicago’s Chinatown is the second-oldest settlement of Chinese in America, formed in 1915, and is not to be confused with “New Chinatown”, which is centered on Argyle Street and is largely populated by residents of Southeast Asian descent.
Transportation
The Dan Ryan Expressway and the Stevenson Expressway intersect over the southwest of Chinatown. Several forms of public transportation are also available, including elevated train and bus routes.
The area also has access to Divvy, Lyft/Uber rideshare services, and taxi services. Unfortunately, this means that rideshare accidents, pedestrian accidents, motor vehicle accidents, and public transportation accidents can be common in the area.
Demographics
Chinatown has a population of 16,325. The majority of the population (90%) are ethnic Chinese, with most of the population being considered elderly. The area has multiple Chinese businesses and is a popular tourist destination.
Education
Chinatown students are primarily serviced by Chicago Public School District and private schools, which include the following:
- John C. Haines School
- Phillips Academy High School
- St. Therese Chinese Catholic School
- Pui Tak Christian School
When sending your child off to school you assume they will remain safe, however, this isn’t always the case. School bus accidents, gym and physical education accidents, lack of supervision, daycare accidents, playground injuries, and school district negligence are just a few examples of the types of school injury cases America’s Consumer Lawyer has experience with.
Attractions
Chinatown is home to many activities and attractions, which include:
- Chinatown 5K
- Chinese New Year Festival
- Dragon Boat Races
- Chinatown Square
- Chinese American Museum of Chicago
- Ping Tom Memorial Park
- Chinatown Gate
While most of the time spent at these Chinatown attractions will be enjoyable and uneventful, accidents can occur, including premises accidents, slip and falls, bicycle accidents, bus accidents, car accidents, drinking and driving, dog bites, and playground accidents.
