Introduction
Lake View, and its smaller surrounding neighborhoods, are located on Chicago’s North Side. Lake View was named as number three (3) of Money Magazine’s Top 10 Big-City Neighborhoods for best places to live in 2013.
Transportation
A majority of the Lake View area is serviced by the Chicago Transit Authority including the Red Line, the Purple Line, and the Brown Line of the Chicago Elevated railway rapid transit with stations at Addison, Belmont, Paulina, Sheridan, Southport, and Wellington.
The Chicago Transit Authority also operates numerous bus routes in the area, including express routes to Downtown Chicago. Other bus routes in the Lake View area include 8 Halsted, 9 Ashland, 22 Clark, 36 Broadway, 77 Belmont, 134 Stockton–LaSalle Express, 135 Clarendon–LaSalle Express, 136 Sheridan–LaSalle Express, 143 Stockton–Michigan Express, 146 Inner Drive Express, 147 Outer Drive Express, 148 Clarendon–Michigan Express, 151 Sheridan, 152 Addison, and 156 LaSalle.
The area also has access to Divvy rideshare bicycles, as well as Lyft/Uber rideshare services and taxi services. Unfortunately, this means that rideshare accidents, pedestrian accidents, motor vehicle accidents, and public transportation accidents can be common in the area.
Demographics
The Lake View area has a population of 99,876 in its 3.16 square miles, making it the largest of the Chicago community areas by population. According to the most recent U.S. Census, the median income for the area is $82,254.
Communities
Lake View is home to a number of communities, which include:
- Lake View East
Lake View East is considered the Greater Lakeview Area and expanded its boundaries in 2017 to include the Central Lakeview area, which is home to Wrigley Field. Lakeview East boundaries are defined as: Lake Shore Drive on the East, Racine on the West, Diversey Parkway on the South and Irving Park on the north. Lakeview East area consists of two of the largest entertainment districts in Chicago, Boystown and Wrigleyville and Lakeview East is notable for its Jewish population.
- Wrigleyville
Wrigleyville, also known as Lake View East, is named for the area surrounding Wrigley Field with its borders running from north to south, Cornelia Avenue to Grace Street and from east to west, Wilton Avenue to Racine Avenue.
- North Halsted
North Halsted is a smaller area within the Lakeview East boundaries and while some also call the area Boystown, that name is typically reserved for a more specific area along North Halsted Street. North Halsted has the distinction of being recognized as the nation’s first official gay village. The area is also home to one of the largest gay pride parades in the country and multiple gay pride events.
- Boystown
Boystown is the cultural center of one of the largest LGBT+ communities in the nation. The district’s informal boundaries, overlapping with Lakeview East, are Irving Park Road on the north, Broadway on the east, Wellington Avenue on the south, and Sheffield Avenue on the west. The Center on Halsted, an LGBT community center, is also located in this area.
- Lakeview West
The Lakeview West area is located along the Roscoe Village community area. The West Lakeview Neighbors, a community organization, defines Lakeview West as the area bounded by West Addison Street on the north, West Belmont Avenue on the south, North Southport Avenue on the east and North Ravenswood Avenue on the west.
