Introduction

New City is located on the southwest side of Chicago in the South Side district and was home to the famous Union Stock Yards until their closing in 1971.

Transportation

New City is serviced by the CTA Red Line, as well as busses #8 and #72.

The area also has access to Divvy rideshare bicycles, as well as Lyft/Uber rideshare services and taxi services. Unfortunately, this means that rideshare accidents, pedestrian accidents, motor vehicle accidents, and public transportation accidents can be common in the area.

Demographics

New City has a population of 40,997 in its 4.86 square miles. According to the most recent U.S. Census, the median income for the area is $30,421.

Neighborhoods

New City is home to two neighborhoods, which include:

  • Back of the Yard

Back of the Yards is an industrial and residential area named for its close proximity to the former Union Stock Yards. Life in this area was explored in the book, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Back of the Yard was populated mostly by Eastern European immigrants and their families, until after the 1970’s when the stockyard closed and the number of jobs in the area decreased. Since that time, Back of the Yards has seen an increase in its Mexican-American population.

  • Canaryville

Canaryville, extending from 40th Street to 49th Street between Halsted Street and Parnell Avenue, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Chicago and its name may refer to the sparrows that often fed in the stockyards in the late 19th century. Traditionally, Canaryville was an Irish-American neighborhood, but since the late 20th Century, the area has seen a migration of Mexican-American residents.

Education

New City students are primarily serviced by Chicago Public Schools and charter schools, but is also home to private and parochial schools, including:

  • Visitation Catholic School
  • Saint Gabriel Catholic School
  • Chicago Non-Public School Science Exposition

When sending your child off to school you assume they will remain safe, however, this isn’t always the case. School bus accidents, gym and physical education accidents, lack of supervision, daycare accidents, playground injuries, and school district negligence are just a few examples of the types of school injury cases America’s Consumer Lawyer has experience with.

Attractions

New City is home to many activities and attractions, which include:

  • Sherman Park
  • Davis Square Park
  • Union Stockyards Gate
  • Lowe Playground Park

While most of the time spent at these New City attractions will be enjoyable and uneventful, accidents can occur, including premises accidents, slip and falls, bicycle accidents, bus accidents, car accidents, drinking and driving, dog bites, and playground accidents.
