Introduction

Roseland and its associated neighborhoods of Fernwood, Princeton Park, Rosemoor, and Lilydale, are located on the far south side of Chicago. The area was originally settled by Dutch settlers in the 1840’s but quickly became an area of many cultures, ethnicities, and races working in the industrial field through the 1960’s.

Transportation

Roseland is accessible by the Chicago “L” Red Line, as well as the ME Train and Busses #103, #119, and #34.

The area also has access to Lyft/Uber rideshare services, and taxi services. Unfortunately, this means that rideshare accidents, pedestrian accidents, motor vehicle accidents, and public transportation accidents can be common in the area.

Demographics

Roseland has a median household income of $37,242 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The population in the area is 42,505 within its 4.86 square miles.

Neighborhoods

  • Fernwood

Fernwood lies on the western edge of Roseland, between 99th and 103rd Streets, extending west into the Washington Heights community up to Halsted Street.

  • Lilydale

Lilydale is located on the northwest corner of Roseland. While once a booming area due to its proximity to steel mills, railroads, and streetcars, the Lilydale of today is approximately 12 city blocks that are often referred to as part of Princeton Park.

  • Princeton Park

Princeton Park is located in the northwest corner of Roseland and was built in 1944.

Education

Roseland students are primarily serviced by the City of Chicago School District, magnet schools, and private schools, including:

  • Bennett Elementary School
  • Cullen Elementary School
  • Curtis Elementary School
  • Scanlon Elementary School
  • Dunne Elementary School
  • Frank L. Gillespie Elementary School
  • Alex Haley Academy Elementary School
  • L. Hughes Elementary School
  • Kohn Elementary School
  • Lavizzo Elementary School
  • Fenger High School
  • Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy
  • Harlan Academy High School
  • Chicago Collegiate Charter School
  • Harlan Academic Center
  • Turner-Drew K-8 Magnet School
  • Roseland Christian School

The northeast portion of Roseland is also home to the main campus of Chicago State University.

When sending your child off to school you assume they will remain safe, however this isn’t always the case. School bus accidents, gym and physical education accidents, lack of supervision, daycare accidents, playground injuries, college accidents and school district negligence are just a few examples of the types of school injury cases America’s Consumer Lawyer has experience with.

Attractions

Roseland is home to some activities and attractions, which include:

  • Palmer Park
  • Abbott Park
  • Fernwood Park
  • Smith (Wendell) Park

While most of the time spent at these Roseland attractions will be enjoyable and uneventful, accidents can occur, including premises accidents, slip and falls, bicycle accidents, bus accidents, car accidents, drinking and driving, dog bites, and playground accidents.
