Introduction

South Lawndale is an area on the West Side of Chicago and is notable for its two well-known neighborhoods, Little Village and Marshall Square.

Transportation

South Lawndale is served by several different modes of transportation. Rapid Transit is provided by the Chicago “L” Pink Line. The area can also be accessed by the Metra BNSF Railway Train and Bus #82.

The area also has access to Lyft/Uber rideshare services and taxi services. Unfortunately, this means that rideshare accidents, pedestrian accidents, motor vehicle accidents, and public transportation accidents can be common in the area.

Demographics

South Lawndale has a population of 73,826 in its 4.4 square miles. According to the most recent U.S. Census, the median income for the area is $30,701.

Neighborhoods

Little Village

Little Village was originally settled by Eastern European immigrants in the late 19th Century after the Great Chicago Fire. The area now has a large Polish and Hispanic population and is dubbed “Mexico of the Midwest” by its residents. Little Village has the largest Hispanic parade in Chicago and is home to many community parks and the second-highest grossing shopping district in the city.

Marshall Square

Marshall Square is a neighborhood in the northeast corner of the South Lawndale Community Area, named for the square formed by Marshall Boulevard, 24th Boulevard, Cermak Road, and California Avenue. According to the Chicago Museum History Research Center, James A. Marshall, for whom Marshall Boulevard was named, lived in Chicago in the 1830s, opened a dancing school, and served as secretary of the Chicago Real Estate Board in 1833.

Education

South Lawndale students are primarily serviced by the City of Chicago School District, as well as charter schools and private schools, which include:

  • Farragut Career Academy
  • Little Village Lawndale High School
  • Spry Community Links High School
  • Farragut Public School
  • World Language Public School
  • Infinity Public School
  • Social Justice and Multicultural Arts High Schools
  • Rosario Castellanos Middle School
  • Madero Middle School
  • Eli Whitney Grammar School
  • Our Lady of Tepeyac High School
  • Octavio Paz School
  • Maria Saucedo Elementary School

When sending your child off to school you assume they will remain safe, however, this isn’t always the case. School bus accidents, gym and physical education accidents, lack of supervision, daycare accidents, playground injuries, and school district negligence are just a few examples of the types of school injury cases America’s Consumer Lawyer has experience with.

Attractions

South Lawndale is home to many activities and attractions, which include:

  • Piotrowski Park
  • Chicago Portage
  • La Villita Park
  • Shedd Park
  • Washtenaw Park
  • Homan Playground Park
  • Marshall Square Theater
  • Villapalooza Festival

While most of the time spent at these South Lawndale attractions will be enjoyable and uneventful, accidents can occur, including premises accidents, slip and falls, bicycle accidents, bus accidents, car accidents, drinking and driving, dog bites, and playground accidents.
