Introduction

Uptown’s boundaries are Foster Avenue on the north; Lake Michigan on the east; Montrose (Ravenswood to Clark), and Irving Park (Clark Street to Lake Michigan) on the south; Ravenswood (Foster to Montrose), and Clark (Montrose to Irving Park) on the west. To the north is Edgewater, to the west is Lincoln Square, and to the south is Lake View.

Uptown has been a popular entertainment district in the Chicago area for over a century and has many entertainment landmarks, including the Aragon Ballroom, the Riviera Theater, and Uptown Theater. The area also includes Argyle Street, locally known as New Chinatown, which houses Asian shops and restaurants.

Transportation

Uptown and its surrounding neighborhoods are serviced by Argyle station, Lawrence station, and Wilson station, on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Red Line. To the west of the neighborhood is Ravenswood station on Metra’s Union Pacific / North Line, which provides commuter rail service between Kenosha station and Ogilvie Transportation Center.

The Chicago Transit Authority’s #92 Foster, #81 Lawrence, #78 Montrose, #80 Irving Park, #22 Clark, #36 Broadway, and #151 Sheridan bus lines serve the neighborhood.

The area also has access to Divvy rideshare bicycles, as well as Lyft/Uber rideshare services and taxi services. Unfortunately, this means that rideshare accidents, pedestrian accidents, motor vehicle accidents, and public transportation accidents can be common in the area.

Demographics

Uptown, located in Cook County, is approximately 2.35 square miles, and has a population of 55,137 as of the most recent U.S. Census with a median household income is $45,644.

Communities

Uptown is home to a number of neighborhoods, which include:

  • Buena Park

Buena Park has the boundaries of Montrose Avenue, Irving Park Road, Graceland Cemetery, and Lake Shore Drive. At the center of the neighborhood is the Hutchinson Historic District and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

  • Sheridan Park

Sheridan Park has boundaries of Lawrence Avenue, Clark, Montrose, and Broadway and is mostly residential, but has a growing business district along Wilson Avenue. Sheridan Park is home to Truman College.

  • Margate Park

Margate Park is located in the extreme northeast corner of the Uptown community. Many of the houses in the area were built between the 1890s and the 1920’s and the area is a popular and thriving home to many of the area’s LGBT+ community.

Education

Uptown area students are primarily serviced by Chicago Public Schools, including:

  • Brennemann Elementary School
  • Goudy Elementary School
  • McCutcheon Elementary School
  • McPherson Elementary School
  • Ravenswood Elementary School
  • Stockton Elementary School
  • Courtenay Language Arts Center
  • Senn High School
  • Amundsen High School

The area also has access to Walt Disney Magnet School and Uplift Community High School, as well as the following private schools:

  • St. Mary of the Lake Elementary School
  • St. Thomas of Canterbury Elementary School

Uptown also has three colleges and universities, which include:

  • Harry S Truman College
  • St. Augustine College
  • American Islamic College

When sending your child off to school you assume they will remain safe, however, this isn’t always the case. School bus accidents, gym and physical education accidents, lack of supervision, daycare accidents, playground injuries, college accidents, and school district negligence are just a few examples of the types of school injury cases America’s Consumer Lawyer has experience with.

Attractions

Uptown is home to many activities and attractions, which include:

  • Graceland Cemetery
  • Lincoln Park
  • Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary
  • Puptown Dog Park
  • Wilson Skatepark
  • Montrose Beach
  • Montrose Harbor
  • Clarendon Park
  • Chase Park
  • Essanay Studios
  • Swedish American Museum Center
  • The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge

While most of the time spent at these Uptown attractions will be enjoyable and uneventful, accidents can occur, including premises accidents, slip and falls, bicycle accidents, bus accidents, car accidents, drinking and driving, dog bites, and playground accidents.
