Hi Megan. The statute of limitations will limit how long you can be sued for a debt, but it doesn't erase the debt from existence. Debts are often sold repeatedly to different firms who then try to recoup the money you owe. This can happen indefinitely and follow you for years and years. However, if you're unsure if the debt is legitimate, you can request that they provide proof of the debt to you and if you find that it is inaccurate, you can then dispute it. Let's talk more about the calls you're getting and how you can get them to stop once and for all. I will be in touch, but please feel free to contact me sooner at 312 300 5996. Thanks, Mike

Hi, I'm getting a call about a debt collection from a similar number (866-384-9143) - I'm not sure if it's the same as Ussa. I called back and had a hard time getting an answer about what the issue was. I was eventually told that they were Cambridge Law Firm, attempting to collect a payment from a Citibank Mastercard in my name that defaulted in 2009. I don't remember having a credit card with Citibank, but they had dates on the card and my social - I'm not sure if it's a scam or someone opened it under my name. When I asked about the statute of limitations passing (I live in SC, so it looks like the SOL is three years), the person I spoke with said that that didn't matter because Citi wasn't charging interest. I'm pretty sure that's not true, but I'm not certain. I've worked hard to have a good credit score, so I'm not sure what to do. The sites I've read online say that even a reduced payment will put this on my credit report, so if it was a case of stolen identity, it will bring my score down. I found this site while trying to find more information on the phone number, and thought it might be worth asking in case. Thank you! Megan
