False Advertising/Deceptive Surcharges

According to complaints, the company misguidedly offered services for certain rates only for customers to incur added charges. Apparently, these customers were quoted for a certain amount but were charged almost double the amount upon billing. CenturyLink, apparently, justified the charges with the numerous clauses in its contracts which were not clarified to its customers. Per its BBB file (Lumen Technologies), the Minnesota Attorney General had even filed a lawsuit against the company for its fraudulent practices and despite the filing, complaints continued to flood the AG’s office.

Faulty Services

Aside from its hidden charges, CenturyLink is also criticized for its technical services. Numerous complaints aired out frustrations against the company’s technicians leaving customers with severed phone and internet connections. Others were promised internet connections only for months to fly by without the said service, and being told their areas are for phone lines only.

Billing Problems

Aside from the extra charges, billing complaints against CenturyLink pointed out the company’s issues with adjusting and consolidating charges. Customers who finished paying for their accounts and those who requested to update their payment information had incurred months’ worth of bills. Some suspected the charges reflected had been topped up with penalties despite CenturyLink making the mistake on its end.

Poor Customer Service

CenturyLink has failed its customers time and time again. Aside from its incredulous charges, its customer service has been a pain to many consumers. According to complaints, their agents have either been elusive with complaints or harassing with the frequency of their calls (with some receiving numerous calls from people claiming to be part of the company). Even loyal customers who have been with CenturyLink for years or over a decade have been met with the same lousy customer service.

Unfortunately, deceptive charges, faulty services, billing issues, and poor customer service complaints are just the beginning for CenturyLink. CenturyLink customers are left wondering what options they have regarding their consumer rights.

We Fix Complaints When Customer Service Won’t

Has CenturyLink used misleading sales tactics? Have you received poor service? Do you have complaints with billing? Do you want customer service at CenturyLink to listen?

A lot of CenturyLink Corporation customers aren’t happy with their service and the Better Business Bureau lists 4,548 customer complaints against the company in the past three years, including complaints for billing and collections practices, problems with a service/product, advertising and sales, among others.

If your complaints haven’t been heard, we can help. At Mike Agruss Law we help customers who have been mistreated by big companies–much like CenturyLink–and we turn your complaints into resolutions!

We’ll not only file your legal demands with CenturyLink, we’ll negotiate with the company. If your claim isn’t resolved through these negotiations, we’ll work through the legal process that is outlined in your CenturyLink contract, which is typically arbitration.

Mike Agruss Law gets results–including zero balances, refunds, and other compensation.

Here’s How to Make Big Companies Listen

It can be frustrating when you rely on a service and don’t get the results you’ve paid for. Big companies make mistakes every day and not only is it their fault, but it can also cost you money, time, and leave you with big headaches.

Have you tried calling CenturyLink to address an issue, only to be told that the representative has no authority to do so? Or maybe you’ve tried talking to someone higher up in the company, only to be ignored, dismissed, or they take too long, continuing to waste your precious time. Maybe you’ve sent an email to the company which only resulted in a prefabricated response or they never follow through with what they’ve promised.

When you’re limited in your choices for service providers or you’re locked into a contract, what can you do?

Fortunately, you do have options.

Use Arbitration to Settle Your Complaint

Most companies like CenturyLink have an arbitration clause in their contracts to prevent being taken to court for traditional litigation. This is actually an advantage for the consumer. When you request an arbitration hearing, an independent third-party (the arbitrator) with knowledge of the type of situation involved will listen to the facts from both sides and make an impartial, binding decision. CenturyLink will have to do a lot of work and there is no guarantee that they will have a successful outcome.

Arbitration is Fast, Inexpensive, and Private

Arbitration with CenturyLink is conducted through the American Arbitration Association (AAA). According to the AAA Consumer Due Process Protocol, arbitration through AAA will comply with their Statement of Principles, which includes:

  • The process is fundamentally fair – All parties are entitled to qualified, competent, impartial arbitrators who will conduct a fair hearing.
  • You get access to all relevant information – This includes reasonable costs, confidentiality, reasonable time limits, and meeting times and/or locations that are agreeable to both parties.
  • Transparency – AAA provides clear arbitration agreements and the ability for each side to hire their own representation.
  • Just process – Arbitration allows the arbitrator to award the same relief as traditional litigation in a binding decision.
  • Alternative to arbitration – Mediation and the ability to take the case to small claims court should be available in some cases.

Arbitration Gives you Control and Leverage

When CenturyLink is alerted that you plan to pursue arbitration, they know it will cost them money out of pocket. Not only do they run the risk of losing the case, but they will also pay for their mistake(s) and the arbitration itself. This gives you more leverage with your demands.

If CenturyLink doesn’t meet those demands and you have a real complaint, Mike Agruss Law can help by representing you in arbitration where you will get a fair, just, and transparent hearing.

Control and Leverage Triggers Faster Settlements

Large companies like CenturyLink don’t like the uncertainty and loss of control that comes with arbitration. Not only do they lose the advantage in the situation, but you’re also on equal footing with them in the eyes of arbitration.

The first step in taking on CenturyLink is to formally raise your complaint. The lawyers at Mike Agruss Law can help you to do so. We will send a letter of demands to the corporate offices of CenturyLink, letting them know that you’re ready to begin arbitration if a satisfactory resolution is not achieved. Typically, this is 30 days, but it will depend on your specific contract with CenturyLink.

Approximately 50% of cases will settle before proceeding to an arbitration hearing during this time. However, if CenturyLink doesn’t offer a reasonable settlement within the appropriate time frame, the next step would be filing a case with AAA. Mike Agruss Law will not only put together the necessary paperwork for arbitration, but we will also help you take the next steps in the arbitration process.

UDAAP and Arbitration

UDAAP is an acronym representing laws that prohibit Unfair, Deceptive, or Abusive Acts or Practices in the context of trade or business. This includes misrepresentation, deception, false advertising, or false promises. These laws emerged following the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that was enacted in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The ultimate goal with these laws is geared towards protecting consumers involved in financial transactions, educating consumers on their rights, and allowing them access to information and resources to best inform their decisions.

UDAAP laws are regulated by two organizations, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC expanded the initial UDAAP laws in 2004 to include unfair and deceptive acts and practices. Some standards for unfairness, in particular, include if it causes or is likely to cause substantial injury to consumers, the injury is not reasonably avoidable by consumers, and the injury is not outweighed by countervailing benefits to consumers or to competition.

Every state has UDAAP laws, which can vary widely. However, the lawyers at Mike Agruss Law understand these laws and can use them to get compensation for deceptive practices, representing consumers throughout the country in cases of arbitration at no cost to them. The company will not only pay the consumer, but they will also pay my fees as well. The consumer will never pay me a cent.

If you’re dealing with an issue with CenturyLink, you might try filing a complaint with the BBB or the customer service team with CenturyLink. Unfortunately, these avenues won’t always lead to a successful resolution for you, the customer. Instead, you may want to consider an experienced arbitration lawyer to take on your case.

Arbitration is a very useful tool for resolving disputes, and Mike Agruss Law can help. With our expert guidance, we bring the big companies to the table and provide the support needed to get your bills corrected, credit reports fixed, improper fees refunded, and more. Let us pick up the sword for you; you have nothing to lose.

How Do I File a Complaint Against CenturyLink?

We will use your state’s UDAAP law to file a complaint in Arbitration on your behalf at no cost to you. UDAAP laws include misrepresentation, deception, false advertising, or false promises. Under your state’s UDAAP law, you are likely entitled to money damages for your actual damages.  Plus, the other side will pay our fees and costs.  You will not pay us a penny.

Hello, I own a small business and have had service with Centurylink for almost 6 years. I noticed my bill was very high so I called to get a reduced rate. The customer service rep told me the only way to get a lower rate was to cancel my service and restart it. I told him the only way I was okay with this was if I could keep my business phone number. He assured me that this was not a problem and provided me with a phone number to call when my new service started. When it started, I called and spoke to Marcus in the small business department. He told me I had a legacy phone number (702-452-0005) and that it was no long available in my area. All of these calls were recorded, I specifically told them how important it was to retain my businesses phone number. I feel my retail business is now going to suffer a major loss due to Lumen/Centurylink’s mistake. My current and returning customers can’t reach my business as well as a disruption in Google analytics to find my website for new business. Please let me know if this is something you can help me with. Thank you, Trisha Chamberlain Mattress Mania 702-556-0916

Bo Bergstrom, 30 Village Road, Silver City NM 88061 CenturyLink Account # 332036457 - landline 575-538-9086 THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM: CenturyLink deprived me of internet and landline phone use for (two days short of ) 15 weeks by failing to repair their equipment. The double outages occurred between 9.28.23 and 1.9.24. After months and dozens of messages, on 1.9.24, a temporary wire was laid on top of the ground to my own wire box so I now have both services again. But since the wire is lying on the gravel road and across a driveway, sooner or later it will get damaged by traffic, weather, vandals, or chewing. I requested a permanent repair but was told that maybe CenturyLink couldn\'t afford it. So completion is up in the air and I continue to live in tension. Between 9.29.23 and 1.8.24, I received 18 phony appointment texts from CenturyLink Repair. By \"phony\" I mean that no one came and the outages continued. They may have been a psyop intended to buoy my hope then disappoint me repeatedly—harrassment to make me stop being a customer. CenturyLink credited me for 12 weeks of the outages but not for the full 15 weeks. CenturyLink has a long history of internet+landline outages with my service. In 2023, they occurred on 1/3/23, 1/11/23, 1/13/23, 2/17/23, 4/27/23, 5/8/23, 5/28/23 (I didn\'t report this and it was resolved), as well as 9/28/23 (reported on 9/29/23). I could continue to earlier years. What do you think of this outage history? I also request monetary compensation for the most recent 9.28.23-1.9.24 outage. In addition, for 15 weeks, I had subscription fees for apps I wasn\'t able to use. In 12.23, I filed complaints with the Federal Communications Commission and New Mexico Public Regulation Commission. Both accepted my case, but neither has been able to resolve anything with CenturyLink. Likewise, CenturyLink\'s Customer Advocates have been getting stonewalled, and they\'ve been unable to resolve the problem. One example of stonewalling is: During the 15-week outages, the repair department and Field Supervisor repeatedly stated they were waiting for a new cable—whereas the technician Mike who came to my house said the problem was never a missing cable, but the need to bore through the concrete spillway on my road (which is over their original buried cable). INJURY TO ME: I am 76, with a disability, and am low-income eligible for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program. I have a social disability and the internet is my venue for socializing. My mental health challenges include social phobia, so it\'s imperative that I have networking capability. Until 9.28.23, I used internet and landline phone daily to make connections and that helped alleviate my social isolation—a known risk factor to elders\' health. I need to make friends and have a normal social life. That involves using social media and communicating via the internet. In 1967, I began getting classical migraine attacks with visual distortions, excuciating headache, nausea, and those increased during the past 31 weeks. Being without permanent internet and landline overturned my daily patterns and worsened my chronic depression. Before the outages, as an isolated elder, I often communicated by landline phone with other people and that benefited me and them. Internet and phone use gives me a sense of purpose, and a sense of purpose is a universal human need, I think. If you feel that I\'ve suffered injury, would a trial or arbitration be effective? ADDITIONAL: I\'ve never been in arrears on my monthly payments. Is this a breach of contract case? Is CenturyLink guilty of breaking the vendor-customer agreement to supply internet and landline phone service in exchange for a fee? Is there a rule that a telecom which receives federal funding for subsidies like the Affordable Connectivity Program and Lifeline must continue serving those customers? I made photos which show the layout of everything on the ground. I have kept notes about my outage history, Advocate dialogues, letters, texts, bills, etc., and will gladly share them. Thank you for reading this. —Sincerely, Bo Bergstrom

We have a new house and are unable to get a phone line. The phone cable is directly across from our drive. Century link has sent out technicians and mailed us equipment. I have numerous emails saved confirming installation. The last representative I talked to laughed and said \"Good Luck\" Century is Unable to dig a phone line. He said all funds were on hold unless I was low income. He did say I could pay my self. We now have cell phone with spotty connection Our internet is via satellite. We really are upset and have been dealing with this since April.
