Introduction

Boone County, with a county seat of Belvidere, has a population of 54,165 according to the most recent U.S. census. Boone County was formed in 1837 and is named after frontiersman Daniel Boone. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Boone County has a total area of 289 square miles, of which 286 square miles is land and 2.3 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Boone County maintains its rural heritage while having access to two large metropolitan areas, the Greater Chicago Metropolitan area to the east and the Rockford Metropolitan area to the west. Because of its centralized location, Boone County’s highways are bustling with all types of motor vehicles, which unfortunately means car accidents, trucking accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Boone County had 829 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, seven (7) were fatal, 199 resulted in injuries, and 34 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Boone County include: Interstate 90, U.S. Route 20, Illinois Route 76, and Illinois Route 173.

Climate and Weather

Average temperatures for Boone County range from lows of 11 °F in January to highs of 85 °F in July. Average monthly precipitation ranges from 1.29 inches in February to 4.56 inches in June in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Boone County has approximately 18,505 households and 14,273 families, with 61.6% of these households consisting of married couples and 41.5% with children under the age of 18. The median household income for families is $69,380 making Boone County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
