Introduction

Bureau County, with its county seat of Princeton, had a population of 34,978 as of the last U.S. Census and was named for brothers Michel and Pierre Bureau, French-Canadians who ran a trading post near the junction of the Illinois River and Big Bureau Creek. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau county has a total area of 874 square miles, of which 869 square miles consists of land and 4.5 square miles is water. Big Bureau Creek is the main body of water in the county.

Major Highways

Bureau County is home to 220 miles of county highways and 55 bridges, making it a busy area for vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Bureau County had 756 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, six (6) were fatal, 135 resulted in injuries, and 24 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Bureau County include: Interstate 80, Interstate 180, U.S. Route 6, U.S. Route 34, Illinois Route 26, Illinois Route 29, Illinois Route 40, Illinois Route 89, Illinois Route 92. 

Climate and Weather

Bureau County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 85 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 14 °F during winter. On average, Bureau County gets 38.1 inches of of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

Bureau County has approximately 14,262 households with 53.6% of these households consisting of married couples and 29.8% with children under the age of 18. The median household income is $45,692 and for families the median household income is $55,791, making Bureau County a middle-class, family-oriented community.

Education
