Introduction
Cass County, with the county seat of Virginia, has a population of 13,642 as of the last U.S. Census. The county is named for Lewis Cass, Andrew Jackson’s Secretary of War and United States Secretary of State under President Buchanan in 1860.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Cass County has a total area of 384 square miles, of which 376 square miles is made up of land and 7.9 square miles is made up of water. Cass County is home to part of the Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge and has three rivers, the Illinois, the Little Sangamon, and the Sangamon running through it.
Major Highways
Cass County is made up of small towns and villages of mostly agricultural land and rich outdoor activities that keep both natives and tourists busy. Cass County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 15 °F during winter. On average, Cass County gets 38.8 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Cass County has approximately 5,270 households with 51.1% of these households consisting of married couples and 33.9% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Cass County is $44,544 and the median income for families is $51,624, making Cass County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
