Introduction

Clark County, with the county seat of Marshall, is located in the southeastern part of Illinois. Named for an officer of the American Revolution and older brother of William Clark, George Rogers Clark, the county has a population of 16,335 as of the most recent U.S. Census. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Clark County has a total area of 505 square miles, of which 501 square miles is land and 3.4 square miles is water. Part of the county’s eastern border is defined by the Wabash River, with the north fork of the Embarras River, Hurricane Creek, and Big Creek as the main streams of Clark County.

Major Highways

Clark County has many historical sights, outdoor activities, and agricultural areas keeping its highways busy around the clock with vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Clark County had 378 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, two (2) were fatal, 83 resulted in injuries, and 21 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Clark County include: Interstate 70, U.S. Route 40, Illinois Route 1, and Illinois Route 49.

Climate and Weather

Clark County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 86 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 16 °F during winter. On average, Clark County gets 41.5 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, truck accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

Clark County has approximately 6,782 households with 53.5% of these households consisting of married couples and 30.3% with children under the age of 18. The median household income for households in Clark County is $43,597 and for families the median income is $52,689, making Clark County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
