Introduction

Clay County, with the county seat of Louisville, has a population of 13,815 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named in honor of Henry Clay, a famous statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky, and U.S. Secretary of State. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Clay County has a total area of 470 square miles, of which 468 square miles is land and 1.3 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Clay County is a welcoming and busy community built on the railroad industry. Its many outdoor activities and different fairs and attractions keep its highways busy around the clock with vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Clay County had 218 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, two (2) were fatal, 48 resulted in injuries, and 11 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Clay County include: Interstate 57, U.S. Route 45, U.S. Route 50, and Illinois Route 37.

Climate and Weather

Clay County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 89 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 21 °F during winter. On average, Clay County gets 42.8 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, rideshare accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

Clay County has approximately 5,697 households with 52.1% of these households consisting of married couples and 29.5% with children under the age of 18. The median household income for families is $48,679, making Clay County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
