Introduction

Crawford County, with the county seat of Robinson, has a population of 19,817 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named in honor of William H. Crawford from Georgia, the Secretary of State and Secretary of Treasury at the time of its formation.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Crawford County has a total area of 446 square miles, of which 444 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles is water, with some of the eastern border of the county defined by the Wabash River.

Major Highways

Crawford County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in manufacturing, health care, and administration, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Crawford County had 434 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, three (3) were fatal, 73 resulted in injuries, and 17 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. The major highways that run through Crawford County include: Illinois Route 1 and Illinois Route 33.

Crawford County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 89 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 21 °F during winter. On average, Crawford County gets 43 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Crawford County has approximately 19,817 households with 52.6% of these households consisting of married couples and 28.5% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Crawford County is $41,434 and the median income for families is $51,218, making Crawford County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
