Introduction

DuPage, with the county seat of Wheaton, is one of the collar counties of the Chicago Metropolitan area. The county, with a population of 916,924 as of the most current U.S. Census, has a high socioeconomic profile and is home to some of the wealthiest people in the midwest. In 2018, Niche ranked two municipalities (Clarendon Hills and Naperville) amongst the top 20 best places to live in America.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, DuPage County has a total area of 336 square miles, of which 327 square miles consists of land and 8.9 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

DuPage County has many residents working in technology, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and retail, and is home to O’Hare Airport and DuPage Airport, keeping its roadways busy as a hub for transportation and tourism. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including pedestrian accidents, agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and rideshare accidents.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, DuPage County had 19,931 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 38 were fatal, 4,779 resulted in injuries, and 456 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through DuPage County include: I-88, I-290, I-294, I-355, US 20, US 34, IL 19, IL 38, IL 53, IL 56, IL 59, IL 64, IL 83, IL 390.

Climate and Weather

DuPage County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 14 °F during winter. On average, DuPage County gets 38.1 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

DuPage County has approximately 325,691 households with 60.9% of these households consisting of married couples and 37% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of DuPage County is $98,441 and the median income for families is $113,086.
