Introduction

Edgar County, with the county seat of Paris, has a population of 18,576 as of the most current U.S. Census. The county was named for John Edgar, an Irish-born officer of the Royal Navy who resigned rather than fight against the American’s in the Revolutionary War. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Edgar County has a total area of 624 square miles, of which 623 square miles consists of land and 0.6 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Edgar County has many residents working in manufacturing, transportation, and retail, as well as one public-use airport, Edgar County Airport, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, airport accidents, parking lot accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Edgar County had 278 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, three (3) were fatal, 66 resulted in injuries, and 18 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Edgar County include: U.S. Route, 36, U.S. Route 150, Illinois Route 1, Illinois Route 16, Illinois Route 49, and Illinois Route 133.

Climate and Weather

Edgar County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 86 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 16 °F during winter. On average, Edgar County gets 41.5 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Edgar County has approximately 7,839 households with 50.3% of these households consisting of married couples and 28.5% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Edgar County is $39,904 and the median income for families is $51,588, making Edgar County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
