Introduction

Edwards County, with the county seat of Albion, has a population of 6,721 as of the most current U.S. Census. The county, located in the area known as “Little Egypt”, was named for Ninian Edwards, the governor of the Illinois Territory and later the governor of Illinois. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Edwards County has a total area of 223 square miles, of which 222 square miles consists of land and 0.3 square miles is water. Edwards County is the fourth-smallest county in Illinois by area.

Major Highways

Edwards County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, construction and work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Edwards County had 125 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, zero (0) were fatal, 19 resulted in injuries, and seven (7) of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Edwards County include: Illinois Route 1, Illinois Route 15, and Illinois Route 130.

Climate and Weather

Edwards County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 89 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 21 °F during winter. On average, Edwards County gets 44.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Demographics

Edwards County has approximately 2,840 households with 54.8% of these households consisting of married couples and 28.9% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Edwards County is $40,430 and the median income for families is $51,337, making Edwards County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
