Introduction
Effingham County, with the county seat of Effingham, has a population of 34,242 as of the most recent U.S. Census. The county may be named after Thomas Howard, the third Earl of Effingham, who resigned his commission as general of the British army, refusing to serve in the war against the colonies, however, there is no written proof of this.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Effingham County has a total area of 480 square miles, of which 479 square miles consists of land and 1.2 square miles is water.

Effingham County has a large agricultural community, as well as many residents working in manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Effingham County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 18 °F during winter. On average, Effingham County gets 42.2 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.
