Introduction

Fayette County, with the county seat of Vandalia, has a population of 22,140 as of the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the Revolutionary War. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Fayette County has a total area of 725 square miles, of which 716 square miles consists of land and 8.9 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Fayette County has a large agricultural community, as well as many residents working in health care, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, construction and work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Fayette County had 452 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, three (3) were fatal, 86 resulted in injuries, and 23 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Fayette County include: Interstate 57, Interstate 70, U.S. Route 40, U.S. Route 51, Illinois Route 33, Illinois Route 37, Illinois Route 128, Illinois Route 140, and Illinois Route 185.

Climate and Weather

Fayette County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 18 °F during winter. On average, Fayette County gets 38.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Fayette County has approximately 8,311 households with 53.3% of these households consisting of married couples and 31.2% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Fayette County is $41,269 and the median income for families is $51,216, making Fayette County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
