Introduction

Franklin County, with the county seat of Benton, has a population of 39,561 according to the most current U.S. Census and was named for Benjamin Franklin.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Franklin County has a total area of 431 square miles, of which 409 square miles consists of land and 23 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Franklin County has many residents working in the medical field, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, parking and parking lot accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Franklin County had 882 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, four (4) were fatal, 207 resulted in injuries, and 79 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Franklin County include: Interstate 57, Illinois Route 14, Illinois Route 34, Illinois Route 37, Illinois Route 148, Illinois Route 149, Illinois Route 154, and. Illinois Route 184. 

Climate and Weather

Franklin County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 90 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 21 °F during winter. On average, Franklin County gets 43.3 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Franklin County has approximately 16,617 households with 48.8% of these households consisting of married couples and 30.0% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Franklin County is $34,481 and the median income for families is $43,170, making Franklin County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
