Introduction

Fulton County, with the county seat of Lewistown, has a population of 37,069 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named for the developer of the first commercially successful steamboat, Robert Fulton. Fulton County is home to the largest collection of Woodland Mounds in Illinois, 45 of them, and is known for the annual Spoon River Scenic Drive.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Fulton County has a total area of 883 square miles, of which 866 square miles consists of land and 17 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Fulton County has a strong agricultural presence and many residents working in the medical field, farming, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, and has one public-use airport, Ingersoll Airport in Canton, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, parking and parking lot accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Fulton County had 636 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, nine (9) were fatal, 105 resulted in injuries, and 23 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Fulton County include: U.S. Route 24, U.S. Route 136, Illinois Route 9, Illinois Route 41, Illinois Route 78, Illinois Route 95, Illinois Route 97, Illinois Route 100, and Illinois Route 116.

Climate and Weather

Fulton County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 14 °F during winter. On average, Fulton County gets 37.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Fulton County has approximately 14,536 households with 52.0% of these households consisting of married couples and 29.3% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Fulton County is $41,268 and the median income for families is $50,596, making Fulton County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
