Introduction
Fulton County, with the county seat of Lewistown, has a population of 37,069 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was named for the developer of the first commercially successful steamboat, Robert Fulton. Fulton County is home to the largest collection of Woodland Mounds in Illinois, 45 of them, and is known for the annual Spoon River Scenic Drive.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Fulton County has a total area of 883 square miles, of which 866 square miles consists of land and 17 square miles is water.
Major Highways
Fulton County has a strong agricultural presence and many residents working in the medical field, farming, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, and has one public-use airport, Ingersoll Airport in Canton, keeping its roadways busy.
