Introduction

Greene County, with the county seat of Carrollton, has a population of 13,886 as of the most recent U.S. Census. The county, named after Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, is home to the Koster Site, a notable archaeological site that has produced artifacts from over 7,000 years of human habitation. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Greene County has a total area of 546 square miles, of which 543 square miles consists of land and 3.3 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Greene County has many residents working in the medical field, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, parking and parking lot accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Greene County had 177 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, five (5) were fatal, 46 resulted in injuries, and 12 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Greene County include: U.S. Highway 67, Illinois Route 100, Illinois Route 108, and Illinois Route 267.

Climate and Weather

Greene County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 87 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 16 °F during winter. On average, Greene County gets 35.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Greene County has approximately 5,570 households with 53.0% of these households consisting of married couples and 30.9% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Greene County is $41,450 and the median income for families is $52,049, making Greene County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
