Introduction

Grundy County, with the county seat of Morris, has a population of 50,063 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county, named after U.S. Attorney General Felix Grundy, was home to the Diamond Mine Disaster and is home to the first privately financed nuclear power plant in the United States, the only high-level radioactive waste storage site in the U.S., the Grundy County Speedway, and the Tully Monster.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Grundy County has a total area of 430 square miles, of which 418 square miles consists of land and 12 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Grundy County has many residents working in the medical field, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, parking and parking lot accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Grundy County had 1,026 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, four (4) were fatal, 208 resulted in injuries, and 32 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Grundy County include: I-55, I-80, U.S.-6, Il-17, Il-47, Il-53, and Il-113.

Climate and Weather

Grundy County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 85 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 13 °F during winter. On average, Grundy County gets 35.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Grundy County has approximately 18,546 households with 57.8% of these households consisting of married couples and 38.6% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Grundy County is $64,297 and the median income for families is $75,000, making Grundy County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
