Introduction

Hamilton County, with the county seat of McLeansboro, has a population of 8,457 according to the last U.S. Census. The county was named for Revolutionary War hero and Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hamilton County has a total area of 436 square miles, of which 435 square miles consists of land and 1.2 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Hamilton County has a strong agricultural presence, as well as many residents working in the medical field, coal mining, manufacturing, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Hamilton County had 152 motor vehicle accidents. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Hamilton County include: Illinois Route 14, Illinois Route 142, and Illinois Route 242.

Climate and Weather

Hamilton County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 89 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 20 °F during winter. On average, Hamilton County gets 44.2 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Hamilton County has approximately 3,489 households with 54.9% of these households consisting of married couples and 29.8% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Hamilton County is $35,032 and the median income for families is $50,878, making Hamilton County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
