Introduction

Iroquois County, with the county seat of Watseka, has a population of 29,178 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county is the only county in the United States to be named for the Iroquois people. 

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Iroquois County has a total area of 1,119 square miles, of which 1,117 square miles consists of land and 1.6 square miles is water. The county is the third-largest county in Illinois by land area and the fifth-largest by total area. 

Major Highways

Iroquois County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, and factories, keeping its roadways busy, as well as several railways running through the area. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, railway crossing accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Iroquois County had 561 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, five (5) were fatal, 132 resulted in injuries, and 29 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Iroquois County include: Interstate 57, U.S. Highway 45, U.S. Highway 52, Illinois Route 1, Illinois Route 49, Illinois Route 54, and Illinois Route 116. 

Climate and Weather

Iroquois County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 84 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 14 °F during winter. On average, Iroquois County gets 39.2 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Iroquois County has approximately 11,956 households with 54.7% of these households consisting of married couples and 30.2% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Iroquois County is $47,323 and the median income for families is $56,541, making Iroquois County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
