Introduction

Jackson County, with the county seat of Murphysboro, has a population of 60,218 according to the most recent U.S. Census. The county was incorporated in 1816 and was named for Andrew Jackson.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Jackson County has a total area of 602 square miles, of which 584 square miles consists of land and 18 square miles is water. 

Major Highways

Jackson County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in health care, manufacturing, transportation, and retail, keeping its roadways busy. Unfortunately, this also means that motor vehicle accidents are common including agricultural truck accidents, construction and work zone accidents, car and truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, and accidents involving animals.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in 2017, Jackson County had 1,312 motor vehicle accidents. Of these accidents, 12 were fatal, 314 resulted in injuries, and 64 of these accidents resulted in A-injuries, or injuries that are classified by IDOT as any injury, other than a fatality, that prevents the injured person from walking, driving, or continuing with the activities they were capable of prior to the accident. This can include severe lacerations, skull and chest injuries, broken limbs, and abdominal injuries.

The major highways that run through Jackson County include: U.S. Highway 51, Illinois Route 3, Illinois Route 4, Illinois Route 13, Illinois Route 127, Illinois Route 149, and Illinois Route 151.

Climate and Weather

Jackson County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 88 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 21 °F during winter. On average, Jackson County gets 45.9 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.

Jackson County has approximately 25,538 households with 35.5% of these households consisting of married couples and 23.0% with children under the age of 18. The median household income of Jackson County is $32,169 and the median income for families is $50,787, making Jackson County a middle-class, family-oriented community.
