Introduction
Johnson County, with the county seat of Vienna, has a population of 12,582 according to the last U.S. Census. The county was named for Richard M. Johnson, a U.S. Congressman from Kentucky who later went on to be Vice President.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Johnson County has a total area of 349 square miles, of which 344 square miles consists of land and 4.9 square miles is water.
Major Highways
Johnson County has a largely agricultural community, as well as many residents working in business, transportation, and factories, keeping its roadways busy, as well as several railways running through the area. Johnson County weather is typical for Illinois, with highs averaging 90 °F during the summer months and lows averaging 25 °F during winter. On average, Johnson County gets 48.4 inches of measurable precipitation in the form of rain, snow, or hail, which not only contributes to motor vehicle accidents, but also slip and falls, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents.
